Fraternity gets new home

Greek Row has started to expand.

The house of the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi is now located at 1115 N. Annie Glidden Road, just past Casey’s General Store.

“We just move into the house this past August and this is our first year with a house like this,” said John Sundstrom, a senior corporation communication major. “Last year, we were scattered around DeKalb, but this year we are all together.”

The house is a home away from home for the Phi Kappa Psi boys. It has a fresh paved parking lot for free parking, individual bathrooms, carpeting and a backyard.

“My favorite part about this house is just the fact that we are all finally under one roof,” said George Bychowski, a sophomore computer science major.

Phi Kappa Psi has been at NIU for two years, although this is their first year with a house. The fraternity has 42 members and 36 possible new members. They are also working on starting to raise money for their philanthropy and to start participating in social Greek affairs, now that they have a house to work with.

“Our rooms are big too; the room I live in is similar to an apartment,” Sundstrom said. “My room has a living room, two individual bedrooms, and a bathroom my roommate and I share.”

The house was originally a sorority house, but, due to financial troubles, the house was sold to Phi Kappa Psi.

“I like the fact that our backyard is so nice,” said Kevin Tuskey, a junior athletic training major. “We can hang out, play whiffleball and play bags at the same time out here.”

Because this house has a sorority touch, it has that home-away-from-home feel. It was built in order to fit the comfort needs of those who were living there, and has a set up much different than the other fraternity houses on campus.

“Now we have this great house,” Bychowski said. “Things could not get any better.”

The house has three floors and features three different types of rooms: two small apartments, the corner rooms and the regular sized rooms.

Phi Kappa Psi has 35 members living in the house, and plans to have their ribbon cutting ceremony this Saturday when they will also be putting their letters on the house.
