Bus driver tells his side of the story

I am writing in response to Brittany McDermott’s letter to the editor, “Bus System Lacks Efficiency.” I am a student and also a Huskie Bus Line Driver, so I know what it is like to be passed up by a full bus. But, what I always try to explain to students who ride the buses with me being a driver also is that you would never know what it is like until you are in the driver’s seat of those buses. Countless times of complaining about on time performance or that there are not enough buses, etc. What you have to realize is that things are not always going to go in your favor or go the way that you want it to go. That’s life, it is not always fair. What do you want us bus drivers to do? Would you rather pack all on bus and have an uncomfortable ride to class? Or maybe we can put you on top of the bus so you get the ultimate bus ride experience? Your safety is first and your lives lie within our hands, so we have a lot of responsibility as drivers. Every time my #5 bus is filled to capacity, I make sure that everyone is all the way to the back of the bus so that more people can get on. But those who ride the #5 seem not to know that. What I suggest you do, is take the necessary steps to make sure that you get on a bus that won’t pass you up. You say that you are on a bus stop in plenty enough time to get you to your class on time, maybe getting on a bus 45 minutes prior or earlier to your class so that it is guaranteed that you would be a passenger on Huskie Bus. But, please don’t get mad at us when we pass you up at you stop. Realize that the bus is full and no one else can fit on. Here is some food for thought if you did not know: there are three #5 buses that leave ten minutes apart from the Student center starting at 7 a.m. and ending at 10 p,m. Monday through Thursday, 7 am to 6:30 pm on Fridays.
