Apartment renters out of luck when it comes to owning pets

Having a pet is something that provides a comfort zone for many people. From childhood to adulthood, pets are welcomed companions for many people.

Young adults leaving the familiar surroundings of home to begin the college experience can often find themselves in need of a non-human friend. When it comes to apartment living, though, some will be out of luck.

Some management companies do allow pets, but the majority of management companies don’t.

The rules change from one management company to the other. Some have strict no-pet polices, while others allow pets under certain guidelines.

According to a Jan. 30 Northern Star article, Ray Conley of Conley Apartments, 427 Normal Road, allows small dogs and cats in two of his complexes and only caged pets in his rooming houses.

On the other hand, Laing Management has a different approach by allowing no pets.

“It’s just been a decision over the years, mainly has been our tradition,” Laing Management employee Jim Lisaseld said.

Other management offices are pet-friendly within certain guidelines. Lincolnshire West Apartments fits into this category. They may allow many but not all pets.

Lincolnshire West Apartments allows “any animal that can be in a cage, and also must be under 30 lbs,” Assistant Property Manager Anne Meesriyong. “No dogs though, because of the noise. We’re a quiet lifestyle residence.”

She also said there is a cat deposit to cover any scratches or damage a cat can cause.
Those students looking into living in an apartment and enjoying time with their animal counterpart should research the options available. While one complex may allow everything, another could possibly have a rule against a lessee’s pet of choice.
