Sycamore City Council focused on an ordinance for the issuance of bonds to pay for the additions to the police department area of the public safety building Monday night.
The ordinance will allow the collection of a direct annual tax for the payment of the principal and interest on the bonds. The Taxable General Obligations Bonds amount to $3,570,000.
According to an extract of minutes from the meeting, the tax levy for these bonds will be affecting all of the taxable property within the city during the years which the bonds are outstanding, through 2023. City Manager Bill Nicklas said this tax levy will not bring higher taxes to homeowners or businesses.
“We’ll pay off [the bonds] through our tax levy but we’re not levying an additional tax for our homeowners and businesses,” Nicklas said. “We will have the means to abate the tax that otherwise would have to be added to their property tax bill as we have in the past by going to other sources, whether that’s sales tax, or something like that.”
Nicklas said construction bids for the public safety building addition on will be taken in January and a contract will be awarded in early February. Construction on the building will begin in early spring next year.
The next Sycamore City Council Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5 at the Sycamore Center, 308 W. State St.
