Gov. Pat Quinn will visit NIU at 11:45 a.m. today in the Holmes Student Center Gallery Lounge to discuss the status of MAP grants with students.

The session is open to the public. Quinn, who has stated a desire to restore the about $200 million needed to reinstate the program for the spring 2010 semester, will articulate his efforts to do so at the forum.

A group of NIU students, who rely upon MAP grants to help pay for their education, will join the governor to describe the impact the cuts will have on their education if the funding is not restored.

About 5,600 undergraduate students at NIU – about one-third of the total undergraduate body – receive MAP grants, according to an NIU press release.

“The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated,” NIU President John Peters in the release said. “If these funds aren’t restored, we risk losing an entire generation of hard-working, low-income students.”
