The NIU women’s golf team will host the 25th annual Huskie Classic this Sunday starting at 8 a.m.

Loyola and South Dakota will also be participating in the 36–hole event, . The event will be held at Whisper Creek Golf Course.

Head coach Pam Tyska and her players look forward to the challenge of winning the classic.

“We would love to reclaim the title,” Tyska said.

All the players are eligible to play on the Huskie roster, barring being redshirted or medically unavailable.

For senior Kim Hunley, whom Tyska proclaimed to be the MVP from last season, this will be her final Classic.

“I imagine this being her last Huskie Classic; she wants to make her senior year the best she can,” Tyska said.

Men’s Golf

Sometimes, the little brother beats the big brother and it causes a commotion.

For the NIU men’s golf team though, the analogy and title would be more appropriate by saying the underclassmen defeating the upperclassmen.

Head coach Tom Porten has decided to conduct more competitive practices.

“Bringing the competitive atmosphere to practice helps us prepare better for competition,” Porten said. “Everywhere I’ve been: Cleveland State, Akron and Kent State, we’ve won, so winning is very important.”

Last week during practice, Porten organized a competition that involved freshman Kurtis Luedtke going up against junior Jeff Dick and senior Matt Triplett.

The result - Luedtke succeeded as he chipped and putted better than both upperclassmen.

Women’s Cross Country

Competing in their second-to-last event before the MAC championship, the NIU women’s cross country team looks to have success at the Roy Griak Invitational this Saturday.

The invite will be held in St. Paul, Minn. and will feature the Gophers and Iowa State, both of which are in the top 25.

Assistant coach Mark McConeghey pointed out the event is highly competitive and won’t be a cake-walk.

“This meet is probably one of toughest meets in the country,” McConeghey said.

The Huskies will have eight runners in the event: Courtney Oldenburg, Sunsea Shaw, Breanna Brevitt, Jackie Sciacero, Jessica Troike, Heather Childs, Amanda Trancoso and Nancy Nieto.
