The Kishwaukee YMCA, 2500 W. Bethany Road, in conjunction with America on the Boston-based Move Foundation Inc. hosted “America on the Move” last Friday at the Kishwaukee YMCA.

The first “America on the Move” night concluded an annual week long program between the two corporations that promote healthy living.

“YMCAs throughout the United States work with the America on the Move Foundation for a week,” said Sue Munz, program executive at Kishwaukee YMCA. “Our goal is to work together and accumulate 10 billion steps in a week.”

The Kishwaukee YMCA encouraged participants to partake in a one mile walk, offered several games and had a bouncing castle at their event.

During this week long event YMCAs throughout the nation offered a variety of ways for people in the community to partake in activities that promote healthy living, Munz said.

“We look at ways to try and make the community healthier,” said Rob Wilkinson, Kishwaukee YMCA executive director. “It’s events like this that slowly help inform families about ways to slowly getting more active.”

Though Munz said she was slightly disappointed in the turnout, she said she was happy to have the opportunity to get the DeKalb community aware of the America on the Move program and to continue the YMCA’s goal to promote healthy living.

“The initiative of tonight is to get our community healthier,” Munz said. “An event like this is a fun way to get people inspired about exercise.”

Munz said the Kishwaukee YMCA extends the week-long event to a monthlong event called “Steptember.”

“We extend the event to a four week program where we offer a one month walking pass and pedometer for five dollars,” Munz said. “Hopefully people will take advantage of this and realize that they can live healthier.”

Wilkinson said the week long event and the month long program allows the YMCA to better fulfill their key initiative of trying to improve community health.
