“Balance” was the word that seemed to be flying out of both Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella’s mouths when asked to describe what Milton Bradley was going to bring to the lineup.
However, the switch hitter ended up disappointing, as he hit better from the right side (.333) and struggled to find his groove batting left handed (.231). The Cubs are now contemplating who will be the next player to roam right field.
Mike Buda and Jimmy Johnson argue their differences over who the Cubs should acquire to replace head case Milton Bradley.
Jimmy Johnson: Well Mike, it appears that the Mr. Board Games era at Wrigley has come to an abrupt close after he couldn’t stay healthy and decided to bash the lovable losers' fandom.
Boy, in the beginning of the season I really bought into the idea of Bradley coming in and being that missing piece to a right-handed dominated lineup. I’m sure you’re just as disappointed as I am about how this situation got ugly so fast, and now we need to find a team willing to take him.
Mike Buda: I am very disappointed not only with Bradley, but with the entire team. They underachieved, and that is the Barrel of Monkeys. But now we have to put this season in the past — way, way, way in the past — and look forward to the offseason.
To get out of this Trouble, I have one person in mind and his name is CC – not the fatty. Carl Crawford. The Rays have already expressed some interest in Bradley. Who do you got?
JJ: Guess who? Well, then again, I’ll just tell you. Although Crawford is very appealing to me, I’m just so sick of signing and trading for outfielders who appear to be the answer at the top of our lineup. So, I suggest we trade Bradley to the Blue Jays for shortstop and super-sub Marco Scutaro and splurge the cash on the guy who we should have signed last off-season in Bobby Abreu.
Abreu is a left–handed hitter that has lost some of his power but can still rake to all parts of the field.
MB: The Cubs have acquired a Twister of players in the past who have all eclipsed their prime, and Crawford is only 28. Right now, he’s in the midst of the best years of his life. Scutaro just had a career year, and who knows if he’ll do that again.
JJ: True. But come on Mike, what player on the Cubs roster isn’t old? All these guys are on-board the Battleship to lead the Cubs to salvation. So I don’t really think it’s that big of a deal if we add a couple more old guys.
Plus, a guy like Crawford isn’t going to come cheap. Sure they might take Bradley, but I’d expect the Rays or whatever team to want at least a prospect or a veteran along with him.
MB: Enough. We’re just two guys stuck in a Mouse Trap and you’re making this as difficult as an Operation. We’re just going to have to agree to disagree because in The Game of Life you don’t always get what you want, and ultimately, the decision will come down to whatever Hendry decides is best for the club.
JJ: I agree: We seem to be in an intense exchange of Crossfire. I wish we all just got along like everyone in Candyland...
MB: Yahtzee!
