Jason, Damien and Ripley are coming to town.

The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St., will showcase some of the most terrifying horror films of all time this month on the biggest movie screen in DeKalb County.

A yearly Halloween tradition, the downtown landmark will offer showings of “Friday the 13th,” “The Omen” and “Alien.”

“It gets bigger from year to year,” box office manager Ashley Jaroz said. “It’s a big hit in the area.”
Jaroz says the movies selected are usually chosen based on whether the Egyptian can get the rights to screen it.

Although this October the theater wanted to show legendary horror films “Halloween” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” it was unable to acquire the rights.

To conclude the series, the Egyptian will present the 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Attendees are encouraged to bring props, dress up as their favorite transvestite and especially be prepared do the “Time Warp.” However, no prunes, hot dogs or toast allowed, according to the theatre’s Web site.

Keith Deal, treasurer of The Preservation of the Egyptian Theatre, helped select the iconic musical as a way to do something different for DeKalb residents around Halloween. Deal, who also serves as director of operations for sponsor University Plaza, says he knows the community will be interested.

It’s a terrible movie, but it’s become a cult favorite,” Deal said. “People talk back during certain parts; it’s interactive.”

Also showing is “The Raven,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “Tales of Terror” and “House Of Usher,” four classic Vincent Price films adapted from the works of Edgar Allen Poe that are all free to watch. Sponsored by The Big Read, a National Endowment for the Arts group who gave the DeKalb Public Library a $20,000 Poe grant.

Deal attests the Egyptian’s continued support and success to the generations of residents who have stepped through the doors, and believes any city would be proud of an institution like the theater.

“If it were gone, it would be irreplaceable,” Deal said.
