A memorial statue in honor of the five students killed during the Feb. 14, 2008 shootings was placed in front of Cole Hall Thursday morning.

The title of the Statue is “Remembered,” said Michael Malone, vice president of university advancement. The statue consists of five flowing triangular elements that represent the spirits of the shooting victims.

“In the artist’s mind, it symbolizes the five victims’ spirits rising up like flames,” Malone said.

The piece was sculpted by artist Bruce Niemi, a 1981 NIU graduate. Niemi also sculpted the statue in front of the Barsema Alumni Center, Malone said.

The $150,000 installation fee was covered by donations to a special fund created so a permanent physical memorial could be built, Malone said. Funds came specifically from members of the DeKalb community, the Alumni Association and 35 private donors, he said.
