NIU and University of Illinois battle over homecoming beginnings

It’s an ongoing fight that has had two collegiate opponents slugging at each other for what seems like forever.

In one corner, wearing the blue and orange trunks, stands the University of Illinois. In the other corner, sporting red and black trunks, is Northern Illinois University.

If one was keeping track of this matchup, many would consider it a split decision in the argument of who originated homecoming.

Mike Korcek, retired NIU Sports Information Director has strong feelings on the topic and has always been in his alma mater’s corner.

“I’ve always stood up for Northern Illinois University,” Korcek said.

The first homecoming for the Huskies was on Oct. 10, 1903 when it was proclaimed as “the eventful game” by the Northern Star.

In fact, it featured Northern Illinois State Normal High School Varsity against alumni. The varsity team shut out the alumni team 6-0. Ten more times, the homecoming game featured former alumni taking on the current football team.

The first intercollegiate football team the Huskies played was Wheaton College in 1914. NIU won 29-3.

On the other hand, the Fighting Illini seem to differ on the topic.

“Illinois claimed that one time they invented homecoming,” Korcek said.

What even makes the situation stranger is how this situation has never diffused itself, especially with modern technology where records and facts are very easy to look up.

For some time, NIU has been the little brother in this state and often Illinois is perceived as the big brother who is often more complimented and talked about.

It’s not a matter of who is right or wrong, but there is substantial evidence that shows NIU is the college that started homecoming in Illinois, and it’s something the community should be aware of.

“I think our student body, faculty and everyone involved with this school should know this and be proud of this,” Korcek said.
