The NIU soccer team went winless over homecoming weekend, suffering two heartbreaking home defeats.
What made these two conference losses even hurt that much more was that the Huskies (4-6-2) out-shot both opponents, yet failed to score a goal.
Friday’s game against Ohio (5-5-1) had NIU playing in some unattractive weather, as the Huskies lost 2-0 in wet conditions.
“I’m disappointed with how we played,” NIU head coach Carrie Barker said. “[It] wasn’t one of our best performances.”
At the 24:14 mark during the first period, Bobcats forward Amy Lower cashed in a unassisted goal as goalie Lindsey Curnock had the ball get away from her and the Huskies tried to defend it but Lower headed it in.
In the second period, the Bobcats struck again the 70 minutes of play, when Kim Nordtveit scored when she hit the net off a corner kick from teammate Kelsey Pichel.
Curnock fought the ball out of the net off the corner kick, though Nordtveit gained control of the ball and scored on the right corner of the net.
Sunday’s game was even harder to digest as NIU lost 1-0 to Akron (3-5-2).
The Huskies dominated in all areas including out-shooting the Zips 15 to five while also committing 10 less fouls, 17 to seven.
At the 61 minute mark, the Zips got a two-on-one advantage when Rachel Phillip and Katie Wise got the ball rolling when Phillip crossed the ball to Wise.
Wise then kicked the ball from the box to hit the net and that would be all Akron would need.
"I thought we played a great first half,” Barker said. “We had a lot of opportunities and we have had to put one of those in and we didn’t do that today.”
