Growing pains seem to be the diagnosis of the NIU men’s golf team as four out of five players who participated in the Windon Memorial Monday were freshmen.
The Huskies finished 15th out of 15 teams at the invite, shooting a collective 928.
In the first round, NIU shot a 322, followed with a 301 in the second and ended the tournament shooting 305.
The University of Illinois won the invite, hitting 868.
“We were probably the youngest team in the field,” NIU head coach Tom Porten said.
Besides junior Jeff Dick, who placed the highest of all Huskie players tied for 22nd (76, 72, 75), the other four players participating were freshmen: Matt Gorman, Griffin Bauman, Bryce Emory and Kurtis Luedtke.
Bauman (80-79-75, +21) and Gorman (80-77-77, +21) tied for 68th at the event.
Emory tied for 76th (86, 74, 78, +25), and Luedtke ended up in 81st place (86-78,83, +34).
Playing in unfamiliar territory and getting used to collegiate atmosphere, the young NIU players will be taking each event as a learning experience to build toward success both in the short-term and long-run.
“Sometimes they can get a little too excited and make mistakes,” Porten said. “I’m just trying to get them to become more consistent.”
Coming up next for the men’s team will be the Davidson Invitational, which will be held on Oct. 13 and 14 in Davidson, North Carolina.
Women’s Golf
Snowfall canceled the first day of the NIU Women’s Golf Invitational at Brasada Beach in Oregon on Sunday.
The invite was rescheduled for Monday, with a 27-hole tournament makeup for Sunday’s lost 18 holes.
