Faculty and staff campaign to help students financially

After the success of the True North campaign, the NIU Foundation has implemented a new phase of the campaign effort, the Faculty and Staff Campaign.

In this next part of the campaign, the foundation’s goal is “to demonstrate the commitment of faculty and staff to NIU students,” said Bobbie Cesarek, spokesperson for the Faculty and Staff campaign.

While the True North campaign had a set goal, the Faculty and Staff Campaign does not.
Cesarek said they are simply looking to the NIU faculty and staff to support the students to the best of their ability by donating to the fund. The money received will go toward student scholarships.

“The campaign is really about students,” said Shad Hanselman, director of the Annual Fund of the foundation.

“If everyone helped a little, imagine how many students we can help,” Hanselman said.

The True North campaign goal was to privately fundraise $150 million by June 2010, as NIU President John Peters said during the State of the University address Sept. 10.

The foundation hopes that support of the Faculty and Staff Campaign will resemble that of True North.

“We’re getting a lot of great support across the campus,” Hanselman said.

One reason Hanselman encourages faculty and staff to contribute is because it will increase the likelihood of financial contributions from people outside the university, he said. If the foundation can demonstrate the support coming from within the university, it ultimately means more financial support for the students.

To faculty and staff considering donating, senior biochemistry major Kaitlynn Sullivan suggests that they “remember when they were in our position.”

Freshman meteorology major Nicholas Cortellini said that he would “respect them more for helping their own students.”
