The city of DeKalb’s Liquor Commission affects not only the city of DeKalb, but also NIU students.
Several students are unaware that there is a liquor commission and their function within the city.
Junior journalism major Magdalena Martinez, Antoin Shinaul, sophomore athletic training major and Amanda Merker, sophomore elementary education major, were all asked if they knew that
DeKalb had a liquor commission and all answered, “no.”
The Liquor Commission’s job is to oversee and manage the city’s liquor issues in accordance to Chapter 38 of the Municipal Code of the City of DeKalb.
Chapter 38, titled Intoxicating Liquors, highlights rules and regulations that range from the definition of alcohol to applying for a Liquor License.
The Liquor Commission is comprised of seven members appointed by the Liquor Commissioner, DeKalb Mayor Kris Povlsen.
“The goals of the liquor commission are to look at issues in the community that relate to alcohol and do we need to address concerns that will make delivery of alcohol more efficient and safer,” Povlsen said.
The seven commission members review and investigate applications for liquor licenses and report their findings to the commissioner, discuss any violations of Chapter 38 and recommend punishment, as well as attend monthly liquor commission meetings, according to the DeKalb Municipal Code Chapter 38.
“From time to time they [Liquor Commission] review aspects of Chapter 38 to change, tweak, or delete details,” Povlsen said.
