New 'Left 4 Dead' content is worth a free download, but not its weight in MS points

When Valve released “Left 4 Dead” on PC and Xbox 360 last year, players were expecting regular releases of downloadable content.

It wasn’t until last week that they were able to finally get the first substantial update.

“Left 4 Dead” is the first-person zombie shooter that showed up on many “Game of the Year” and “Best Multiplayer Game” lists in 2008.

The game centers on teamwork with your other three survivor buddies, so playing online with friends is the best way to experience it. You can either play cooperatively through the campaigns, play survival mode or take on the role of special infected zombies to take down human-controlled survivors in versus mode.

Last month, the new campaign “Crash Course” was released for both PC and 360 versions as DLC. Unlike the other four campaigns that came stocked with the original, “Crash Course” only has two chapters where the others have five. Granted, the chapters are longer and a bit tougher, but there’s just not enough meat to this campaign if you want to play co-op or straight through on your own.

Where “Crash Course” shines is in the versus mode. The other four campaigns took a long time to play through an entire versus match, which meant people coming in and out of your team (provided you decide to stick around). I stayed away from versus in the past because it was just too drawn out. With this new campaign, players can be the undead and not be bored to death while playing. A good match will take 20-30 minutes.

The “Crash Course” downloadable content is free for PC users on the Steam network, but Xbox users will have to shell out money for 560 MS Points. I say if you are a computer gamer, snag this freebee and have some fun. Xbox junkies, you might just be better off saving that seven bucks for “Left 4 Dead 2” next month.
