The Holmes Student Center is playing host to a new phone charger booth, located on the first floor near Subway.
“I hope it’s a good service,” said Mitch Kielb, director of the Holmes Student Center.
Norm Jenkins, associate director of the Holmes Student Center, said that the booth comes at no cost to the university and, therefore, no cost to the students. The company who owns the booth generates profit by advertising on the booth.
The machine has the most commonly used cords so that it will be “handy at least when students need it,” Kielb said.
Jenkins said that the booth is not designed to fully charge phones, but just enough so that the phone will last the rest of the day, until a student makes it home.
Kielb said that booth is simply a convenience, similar to the DVD rental machine that has been in the Holmes Student Center since last year.
Kielb plans to see how receptive students are to the booth, and if there is a demand for it, there may be additional booths to follow. Not many students have started to use it yet, but some have decided it is not worth it to them to utilize the service.
Junior pre-nursing major Jalana Miller said she would not use it because “you have to stand there and wait for it to get done. I would just go home.”
Likewise, Jason Specht, senior political science major, said that he would not consider using the booth because it is just not a service that appeals to him.
Some students do believe the booth would be beneficial.
Shelly Burrell, senior sociology and psychology major, said she thinks it’s a great idea because “my phone is always dying,” though the charge booth won’t accommodate her phone.
Tevya Jackson, senior communicative disorders major, agreed and said “I think it’s a good idea, but there needs to be better variety of chargers available.”
Kielb said that student feedback would be appreciated. Students may do so by calling Jenkins at 815-753-4409 or stopping in the Holmes Student Center General Office located by the information desk on the second floor.
