“We just let it slip through our hands,” said NIU head coach Carrie Barker.
For the NIU women’s soccer team it is a trend that has become all too common this season.
The Huskies (4-8-2, 0-4-2 MAC) dropped a pair of important conference road games over the
weekend in disappointing fashion.
It looked as if the Huskies had a victory in the bag against Kent State (7-5-0, 3-2-0) until the Golden Flashes tied the game up with just 40 seconds remaining.
NIU goalie Lindsey Curnock looked close to picking up career shutout 29 before the Flashes’ Beth Diederich snuck a header into the net off a free kick.
“It was one momentary lapse and it changed the entire game,” Curnock said.
Curnock had a busy day with 10 saves as Kent State out-shot the Huskies 22-8.
The offensive pressure by the Golden Flashes continued into double overtime until Vanessa Salerno knocked a rebound off a corner kick pass Curnock to give Kent State a 2-1 win.
“It’s a tough loss to swallow,” Barker said.
Things continued to sour on the Huskies Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 loss to Buffalo (3-10-1, 2-3-1.)
“We didn’t come out ready to play,” Barker said. “We were just flat.”
It didn’t take long for the Bulls to get on the board. Freshman forward Stephanie Velez found an open net just 6 minutes into play for her first of two goals on the day.
The Huskies out-shot Buffalo 13-11, but were unable to find the back of the net.
It’s a story line that NIU has become very familiar with. The Huskies have been shut out seven times including three of their last four .
“We have to come together as a team and figure out where to go from here,” Curnock said.
