MAP grants were addressed Sunday at the Student Association Senate’s first meeting of the school year.
The senate voted unanimously on a resolution to support the restoration of the MAP grant.
SA President Robert Sorsby addressed the topic in his executive report.
He said the senate will meet with state legislators to discuss the funding for the MAP grant during a “student rally day” on Thursday in Springfield.
“State legislators agree, but we need to find the funding for it,” Sorsby said. “This resolution will strongly urge the legislators to re-instate the funding.”
In addition, Sorsby and student trustee Matthew Venaas said they would like to “increase the student understanding” of the SA.
Sorsby said the they have created T-shirts, which were distributed beforehand and encouraged all of the senators to wear them.
The meeting lasted about 15 minutes.
Next week, the senate is expected to confirm their meetings for the school year, along with the president pro tempore and the senate clerk.
The president pro tempore manages the meeting to make sure the senators and other participants follow procedure.
The clerk takes minutes of the senate meetings.
The SA Senate will also confirm the appointments to the SA executive staff, as well as recognize two student organizations.
SA Senate meetings occur Sundays at 6 p.m. in the Sky Room of the Holmes Student Center.
