Lack of resources sometimes leads to limited admissions

Many students may have noticed that some areas of study are not as simple as declaring a major.

There are actually many majors and areas of study that require additional exams, applications and good academic progress.

Limited admissions tend to come down to limited means for providing the proper education for students: For example, the School of Nursing, one of the 16 programs of study listed in the online course catalog as limited admissions.

“We don’t have the resources. There is a nationwide shortage of nursing teachers,” said Julie Amon, academic advisor for the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Therefore, seats are limited and, for some programs, competitively gained, she said.

But the lack of resources does not only come down to a deficiency of teachers; funding has shown itself to be an issue as well.

Cathy Lubbers, academic advisor for the Department of Elementary Education, said the department’s budget from the state does not enable it to take more students.

“There is not a teacher shortage [in Illinois]. There are more teachers than there are teaching positions,” Lubbers said.

Therefore, the number of students allowed to graduate from these programs is limited, she said.

Although limited admissions can be a hassle, it may not be the nerve-racking experience that some students might expect it to be.

“We had to submit an art portfolio like all of the other art majors,” said Katie Bozec, junior art education major. “It was a little stressful because we weren’t exactly sure what they were looking for, but it wasn’t horrible.”
