“Sexploration: A Sexual Scavenger Hunt” was introduced to students Monday night in order to address sexual health issues.

The goal was to discuss awkward issues with sex, keep conversation open and allow students to discuss.

“It’s a great opportunity for residents to get together and discuss awkward topics in a comfortable environment,” said Kat Bryant, senior elementary school special education major.

There were four tables which dealt with four topics: sexual diversity (Lincoln), healthy relationships (Douglas), safer sexual practices (Stevenson) and sexual pleasure (Grant North).

Two community advisers were assigned to guide each group from station to station. Each table included an activity which the attendees were allowed to put their opinion in by standing in one of the four “quadrants” which were labeled: agree, strongly agree, disagree and strongly disagree.

Some of the statements, for example, were, “I am okay with open same-sex couples holding hands and kissing in public.” From that statement, the students moved to one of the quadrants that expressed their opinion.

Some students handled the topic maturely, but others didn’t.

“I think it’s interesting. It’s a little embarrassing, but I do think a lot of people showed up for the wrong reasons and are making a joke out of it,” said Jessie Borgo, an NIU visitor.

In one instance, some students took some of the sex toys and began using them as weapons against each other in a joking manner.

At each of the residence halls, every person that participated in the activities received one raffle ticket. Among some of the items distributed in the raffle were sex toys and NIU merchandise.
All of the groups met up at Grant South to discuss any of the questions that were written at the tables.

“It was nice being able to go somewhere non-judgemental, informative and fun,” said freshman finance major Amelia DeWane.

The event was sponsored by First Year Residential Experience, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center, the Women’s Resource Center, Health Enhancement and the Counseling and Student Development Center. About 80 people turned out for the event.

Was there no discussion about sexually transmitted diseases? They couldn't offer any religious guidance, only Gay is Ok message. What a waste of money & time. I sure hope none of our money went to this event.
