Injuries ended up spoiling the season finale for the NIU women’s golf team, forcing it to forfeit from play at the MAC Fall Preview.

Four players are required to play during events and the Huskies only had three to finish.
After starting strong and out-playing Southern Illinois and Bowling Green, the unexpected setbacks put a sour note on another successful season for the women’s golf team.

Senior Mandi Vavrinchik had arm issues and junior Jessica Parmenter had back spasms which ended play for NIU.

“We had some good things going on,” said head coach Pam Tyska. “But we had some battles that we couldn’t fight.”

Looking ahead to next season, Tyska took much thought and consideration for her players, not wanting them to further injure themselves or the team.

“It would have not been responsible to have those girls continue and risk future injury,” Tyska said. “We are going into an off-season where they can get some rehab and strengthen specific programs that will get them through the spring.”

Men’s Golf

The NIU men’s golf team finished its second to last event of the fall season with a 12th place finish at the Davidson Invitational.

Starting off strong, the Huskies shot a 302 in the first round but fell off and hit 327 in the second.
In the final round of play NIU recovered, shooting 309.

Senior Matt Triplett took advantage of his last playing days with NIU tying for 28th (73-79-77-229, +13).

His performance at the invite was his best this season.

Following Triplett, junior Jeff Dick tied for 40th (77-82-75-234, +18), while freshman Kurtis Luedtke was the third best player for NIU at the invite tying for 46th (80-82-77-239, +23).

The Huskies and head coach Tom Porten will have their fall season finale as they travel to Hopkinsville, Ky. to compete at the Austin Peay Invitational which will start on Monday, October 19th and end the following day.
