Student is cynical toward Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

I was reading Thursday’s paper and I came across the article on Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize. I was very interested to see what type of article the Northern Star would insert into their paper, knowing that would obviously be the paper’s opinion as well. As I expected, the article praised Obama for the things that he supposedly has done to ease world tension and create a more peaceful environment. As a college student who follows politics very closely, I’m appalled by this. Anyone who saw the recent meetings at the United Nations knows the world is no different than it was a few years ago, well besides the fact that the United States president and Castro are best buds! The article states that the committee awarded Obama with the prize for what he has already done, and not what he is going to do, but how can that be when the nominations for the Peace prize had to be in 12 days after he was elected into office. So they’re awarding him for what he did as a senator and his achievements for a week in office? As John Kass states in his Chicago Tribune article, “It’s a 12 Day Miracle! Praise Obama and Pass the Hopium,” during these first 12 days, Obama picked out a dog with his girls, had a sleepover with Mayor Daley, and even picked the Steelers to win the Super Bowl! After those achievements how could anyone think he doesn’t deserve it! Arizona State didn’t even feel like Obama had accomplished enough to give him an honorary degree! And this comes from what is always known as one of the biggest party schools in the country! But somehow the Nobel Peace Prize committee found it suiting to give him that award! ‘Congrats’ Obama, you’re now in the ranks with Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr. and Theodore Roosevelt! I know everyone thinks he’s the second coming, but seriously guys, wait until he does something besides passing an $885 billion stimulus package!
