The School of Nursing is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
For 50 years, the school has grown and has developed into a “point of pride for the university,” said Brigid Lusk, chair of the School of Nursing and Health Studies.
As part of their anniversary, the School of Nursing will host a celebration day. On Saturday, the school will host a tour of its facility on the corner of Normal Road and Ridge Road. The tour will include a stop in the two-year-old Humans Simulation Lab, Lusk said.
That evening, there will be a dinner dance at the Barsema Alumni and Visitor Center where guests will have the opportunity to hear a panel of past faculty and alumni share some of their memories. There will also be a display of many of the School of Nursing textbooks from throughout the last 50 years, Lusk said.
By celebrating the anniversary, Lusk hopes to let people see the quality of the nursing program.
“It would be good for students and faculty to appreciate how involved we are in the community,” Lusk said.
Additionally, Kari Hickey, nursing instructor and member of the celebration planning committee, said that she hopes to “gain respect for the School of Nursing and how far the program has come and continues keeping up with contemporary nursing education.”
The celebration is open to the public, Hickey added.
Plans for continuing the celebration next semester are not complete. However, the School of Nursing is considering bringing in individuals to speak.
