The Center for Governmental Studies is teaming up with NIU’s art department to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
The CGS has never sponsored a competition of this kind before.
“This has never happened before. We just thought it would be nice to do something like this and involve the university in this anniversary,” business manager Mary Strub said.
The art competition is open to all currently enrolled NIU students.
The theme of the art competition is to “Returning Prosperity to America’s Heartland: Building a Shared Vision for our Region’s Future.” This theme is open to all types of interpretations and all types of arts are to be accepted. All artwork must be submitted between between 1 and 4 p.m. Dec. 7- 9 at the Center for Governmental Studies, at in the Monat Building, 148 N. Third St.
The CGS will be hosting a conference on Dec. 10-11 in order to judge the pieces. This conference is not open to the public.
The judges of the competition will include faculty members from NIU’s school of art and one CGS representative. The winners of the competition will be invited to the gala held on March 5. The first place winner will receive $1,000, the second place winner will receive $500 and the third place winner will receive $250.
The initial goal of the competition was to give the event a unique visual component to the event.
“I just hope we get a lot of artwork,” Strub said.
The CGS is a public service that is a public policy development unit. It applies the intellectual resources of the university to address public issues. With a staff of 35 people, the CGS compiles teams that work with the community leaders that belong to governmental and non-governmental organizations.
