Discover Sycamore will be sponsoring a Trick or Treating event from 4:30 to 6 p.m. this Wednesday in downtown Sycamore, during Pumpkin Fest.

Megan Yockey, director of Discover Sycamore, said this event is free for school children to come downtown to collect candy while their parents talk to the different businesses. After dropping off their pumpkins for the pumpkin decorating contest during Pumpkin Fest, kids and their parents can go down State Street to Discover Sycamore member businesses and trick-or-treat.

“[Children] come in their costumes to go and visit the stores and talk with the merchants and get their candy,” Yockey said. “It’s a really big community interaction event.”

Businesses will have orange and black balloons outside their establishments signifying their participation in the event. So far, about 12 businesses have signed up to participate; however, Yockey said any other businesses who would like to participate are encouraged to sign up ahead of time by getting in touch with her. Children and their families don’t have to sign up, but are free to participate during Pumpkin Fest.

“It is part of Pumpkin Fest. Things like this are really kid-focused, so we try and keep it all about the kids,” Yockey said. “You just walk down and they’re all right there on both sides of the street, but they’ll all have the balloons so you can tell who’s a member.”

Sue Elsner, manager at Century 21 Realty, 201 W. State St., said the establishment has participated in the trick-or-treating event in past years and will also do so this year.

“We are handing out candy. It’s fun,” Elsner said.

Jo Ann Grismer, owner of Goin’ Postal, 352 W. State St., has already bought candy for the event and will be handing out treats to people who come in Wednesday.

“I think it’s great; I love it,” Grismer said. “Goin’ Postal wants to see that everybody has a great time and a safe time. Safety is the most important thing.”

Discover Sycamore’s Trick-or-Treating will take place during Pumpkin Fest from 4:30 to 6 p.m. More information is available on the Web site, www.discoversycamore.com.
