Huskies having an impact
By BEN GROSS

It’s never happened for NIU — and now the Huskies will have to wait at least two more years to try.

In 37 meetings, NIU has never won back-to-back games against Toledo.

With the 20-19 loss this weekend, the Huskies fall to 29-8 in the series. In the last 20 games, NIU has only won two.

“I think you have to give them credit,” NIU head coach Jerry Kill said. “We got beat tonight by a team that was better than us.”

The Huskies last had a chance to win back-to-back games in 2006.

The year prior, NIU dominated Toledo with a 35-17 win at the Glass Bowl. But Huskie wide receiver Britt Davis dropped the game-winning touchdown and the game, in the 2006 fog bowl, as Toledo prevailed 17-13.

Unfamiliar territory

For only the second time this season, NIU running back Chad Spann did not find the end zone.
Spann has scored nine rushing touchdowns and caught one this season. He’s tied with running back Noel Devin of West Virginia and place kicker Richard Jackson of Clemson for the No. 10 scorer in the nation.

The only other game that Spann failed to reach the end zone was against Idaho. NIU is 3-1 when the junior scores and is 0-2 when he does not.

There for the picking

Last season NIU had six total interceptions in 13 games.

In six games this season, linebacker Cory Hanson has three interceptions.

The senior is tied with 20 other players with three picks this year. The group is ranked No. 15 in the nation.

“I’m just trying to make a play for my team,” Hanson said about his interception against Toledo.

“One of our goals is to make turnovers.”

Four players with five interceptions in six games lead the nation.
Hanson’s interception at the Glass Bowl gives NIU six picks halfway through the season.

Joining the 1,000 club

While it may not be a 1,000-yard rusher in a season, NIU running back Me’co Brown did reach 1,000 yards against Toledo.

In his 19th game as a Huskie, the sophomore surpassed the 1,000-yard career rushing mark. Brown rushed for 94 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown against the Rockets.

Brown becomes the 30th Huskies to reach the 1,000-yard rushing mark, but has a long way to go to reach the top. NIU’s all-time leading rusher, Garrett Wolfe, finished his college career with 5,164 rushing yards.
