A local restaurant moved one step closer to acquiring a Class B liquor license at Tuesday’s liquor commission meeting.

The commission reviewed the application and business plan of Fushi Yami Hibachi & Sushi Restaurant for a Class B liquor license. It also discussed issues regarding time limits on liquor license application fees, businesses closing for extended periods of time holding on to Liquor Licenses and discussion of a “BYOB” license.

Fushi Yami, 822 W. Lincoln Highway, applied for a Class B liquor license earlier this year. The licensee allows the restaurant to sell beer and wine on the premises only.

The restaurant has been open for one year and customers have had a strong desire for Japanese wine or sake, said Fushi Yami manager Chin C. Tseng. Tseng showed the committee a 10 ounce bottle of sake, which contains 14.5 percent alcohol by volume and meets the standard of the Class B definition of wine, which is wine with no more than 20 percent alcohol by volume.

There is no wording in Chapter 38 that allows the sale of sake.

There was a motion to include sake in the wine definition of the City of DeKalb’s Municipal Code Chapter 38, which was approved.

The committee passed a motion to approve a Class B license for Fushi Yami pending results of background checks and recommendation of Liquor Commissioner, Mayor Kris Povlsen.

Discussions about a possible “BYOB” (bring your own bottle) license in DeKalb was motioned to take no action at this time. Commission member Gerald Phillips said he thought the committee should wait and see how Sycamore does with its BYOB license.

“[We should] think about and see how Sycamore does,” Phillips said.

The liquor commission will meet Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St.
