Northern Star journalists fulfilled true duties of a newspaper in Grady editorial

As a longtime bureau chief for The New York Times and Newsweek magazine, I express my deep admiration to the journalists at the Northern Star for speaking out on the alleged misconduct by the university’s chief of police.

It takes courage to make such a stand, especially when it involves powerful forces in your own backyard. You have clearly done your homework and research, as your recent editorial makes plain, and you have called for change as you see necessary. That is the job of a newspaper.

As you are now experiencing, doing the job of journalism can mean being subjected to insults and accusations, however baseless. Having spent 25 years in the trade, I know well what it’s like to be called a vulture, a traitor, and worse.

In truth, you deserve the respect and appreciation of anyone who opposes abuse of power.
Count me in your corner.
