“Secret Girlfriend” is a new comedy every guy should watch, and ladies could learn a thing or two from this half-hour comedy as well. It’s sexy, funny, ridiculous man-humor that’s extremely enjoyable to watch.
The most interesting aspect of Comedy Central’s new show is the filming style. “Secret Girlfriend” is filmed in a point-of-view format. It’s one of the first-ever TV shows to place you, the viewer, as one of the main characters. The viewer sees, hears and interacts with other characters through an always well-framed POV shot.
You don’t have a clear name (apart from pronouns and your crew calling you “Dude”), you don’t speak much and you never see your face because it’s always cleverly covered up. However, from what other people say, you’re a good-looking, outgoing guy that’s fun to be around and apparently lives in some always-sunny beach town that is crawling with hot young babes that love to party and hit on you.
The premise behind “Secret Girlfriend” is just as creative as the filming. You are dating a psychotic bi-polar but extremely sexy girl, Mandy, who frequently breaks up then hooks back up with you. When Mandy breaks up with you, she usually stalks you, then comes barging back into your life demanding you go back out with her, usually using sex to make the decision easier.
You are usually seen with your crew of two bachelors, Sam and Phil, who keep trying to make big bucks by producing the next viral video on YouTube.
Phil is best described as the instigator. He comes up with all the plans and ideas and sets them in motion; he’s smart but is as laid back as a panda. Sam is your weird-looking, slow-witted but excitable toddler-esque friend. You and Phil often look after Sam to make sure he doesn’t get into too much trouble.
Then comes Jessica, the typical girl-next-door. She’s the secret girlfriend. The girl you keep going out with yet hide from Mandy for fear of her becoming even more jealous and literally killing you and Jessica, and possibly your crew because they think she’s the anti-Christ.
In every episode your crew embarks on some kind of personal mission (usually revolving around hooking up or some other sexual conquest) and usually drags you along with them. Meanwhile, you continue to keep seeing Jessica while avoiding the unavoidable Mandy who seems to barge in everywhere.
The entire cast is comprised of a bunch of minor actors that have only appeared once or twice in other TV series. There are no major players, except for maybe creator and director Ross Novie, who did some assistant director work on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “The Office” and “Arrested Development.” Other than that, this cast is pretty much fresh meat when it comes to leading roles. Most likely the actors are banking on this show to be their big break; and if they keep up the hilarity and insanity that may just happen.
Alexis Krause is by far the best and most convincing cast member in her role as your psychotic ex-girlfriend, Mandy. When she randomly shows up during her fits of rage and jealousy, she literally sends shivers down the viewer’s body, yet when she seduces you with her body, every male viewer can forget about her insanity.
How can “Secret Girlfriend” be described? Hot and sexy? Yes. Degrading toward women? Possibly. A great half hour of original, funny man-humor? Absolutely. “Secret Girlfriend” is on Wednesday nights at 9:30 p.m. on Comedy Central.
