In response to the article “Threloff decides against NIU,” I am appalled at Mr. Gross’ remarks.
The article suggests that Illinois State offers a better degree than Northern Illinois. This type of comment would be expected from an ISU newspaper, however to read it in our own Northern Star is revolting.
Gross describes NIU as a local liberal arts college.
First of all, NIU is larger than Illinois State.
Second, U.S. News and World Report considers NIU a national university (a school conducting significant research and awarding degrees up to the doctoral level). My intent is not to get into a debate about who is the better university, however any person who is willing to admit he is second-rate clearly has no pride.
Maybe the journalism department thinks they are only second best. Maybe mediocrity is acceptable in that department, but I would bet that accounting, biochemistry, meteorology, computer science, geography, engineering and a host of other departments would beg to differ.
Next time you want to suggest a university offers a better degree Mr. Gross, speak for yourself!
