Former NIU student begins new NAACP chapter

In response to HD Hentbrook
It is unfortunate that you were unable to attend the WRC program this past Tuesday. If you had, I think you would better understand the aim and tone of the program.
If you had attended, you would have heard me when I clarified that I had no firsthand experience in the military. You would have heard when I explained that my intention was not to attack any members or veterans of the military. I am the proud daughter of a Vietnam War veteran; the skills my father learned in the Air Force enabled him to get a good job to not only support his family but to ultimately send my sisters and I to college (which is why I am here at NIU in the first place). So, I have much respect and gratitude for those who serve our country in that capacity.
I came across the topic of female soldiers and sexual assault last semester, and I was surprised that the media wasn’t talking much about it. So, I wanted to get a discussion going and decided to create a program around it in order to facilitate that very discussion. And I was sure to inform those who attended the program that I was most definitely not an expert, just a person who is passionate about justice and human rights.
Honestly, it is too bad that you were unable to go to the program – it would have made for a better discussion to get another perspective. But please don’t take things that you read in the Star out of context and make snap judgments about an event that you didn’t even go to.
