While many children will be dressing up in their costumes and going from house-to-house getting candy this Saturday, Sycamore and DeKalb police are reminding residents to be safe.

DeKalb trick-or-treating hours are from 4 to 8 p.m., DeKalb Police Lt. Carl Leoni said.

Leoni said it is best to get out early while there is still light. Those who plan on staying out until it is dark should wear reflective clothing, carry flashlights or glow sticks so drivers and other trick-or-treaters can easily spot them, Leoni said.

Leoni said to stay in groups and not wander to houses alone. He said double shifts begin after 9 p.m. so there will be twice as many officers on patrol to spot any suspicious activity.

Sycamore is also recommending trick-or-treaters go to houses between 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Police Chief Don Thomas said during an Oct. 19 city council meeting.

Thomas suggested residents who are handing out candy should turn their porch lights off at 8 p.m. to let trick-or-treaters know they are done handing out candy.
