"Back to the '80s" rocks the Egyptian Theatre

Forensics club begins practicing early for season

While you’re out trick-or-treating on Halloween, Gwen Stefani, Tommy Lee and Kings of Leon will be in town. Sort of.
“Halloween Extravaganza V” at the House Cafe, 263 W. Lincoln Highway, will feature a handful of popular local bands putting on costumes and transforming into some of music’s most well-known acts. Now in its fifth year, the show has become an Oct. 31 staple.
Kickstand Productions owner John Ugolini says each year seems to get rowdier and crazier.
“The event has gotten so popular that bands often sign up and begin planning their performance a full year in advance,” Ugolini said.
On the bill is The Felix Culpa as No Doubt, Inspector Owl as Andrew WK, The Flips as Kings of Leon, Wolf Nation as Motley Crue, Patrick Hates Ryan Green as The Clash and other bands performing as The Blues Brothers, rap duo Kriss Kross and The Beach Boys.
Tommy Evans, lead singer for Secret Colour, has been going to the show every year, but this one will mark his first time performing as his band channels Oregon-based The Dandy Warhols.
“Their music has greatly influenced our band,” Evans said. “The Halloween show enables us to actually be the rockstars we love.”
The high-point of the show is when utter hellacious madness ensues, as it always does, attests Ugolini. He sees the event as being so relevant that concert goers go home and make babies after being so moved.
Along with music, “Halloween Extravaganza” will feature costume contests and giveaways, including highly sought after prizes like home pregnancy tests, a leopard-print Snuggie and the complete second season of “Coach.”
“Unlike other bars who offer cash prizes, we offer real, serious, life-enriching products,” Ugolini said. “Prizes worth their weight in gold.”
“Halloween Extravaganza V” is at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The cost to get in is $10, or $7 with a costume.
