DeKALB | NIU trustee Manuel “Manny” Sanchez has been approved to a third term on the Board of Trustees.

According to NIU Public Affairs, the Illinois Senate approved Gov. Pat Quinn’s appointment of Sanchez Thursday. Six of NIU’s trustees are approved to six-year terms in this manner.

The student trustee is voted annually in the Student Association executive elections in the spring.

Sanchez has been a trustee since the board’s inception in 1995. Sanchez, a 1970 NIU graduate, helped found the Mexican American Lawyers Association and the Latin American Bar Association. He has also contributed to NIU’s Center for Latino and Latin American Studies and was named one of the Top 50 graduates from NIU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Earlier this month Sanchez traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark as a part of the Chicago bid committee for the 2016 Olympic Games. He described it as a worthwhile experience.

“I felt privileged to be invited,” Sanchez said. “If I had to do it all over again, I’d do it in a heartbeat. It was a rewarding, enriching experience.”
