NIU administration pleased with enrollment numbers
Discussion held about 'rape culture' and the...

Advocating for child abuse awareness and dancing came together during the Dance With a Greek competition.
Last Thursday, the NIU sorority Alpha Sigma Omega hosted its fourth annual dance event in the Regency Room of the Holmes Student Center.
Entered into the competition were three different couples composed of a Greek member and a non-Greek member partner.
Emma Gamboa paired with Bryan Bohorquez of Omega Delta, while Mayra Andrade paired with Jose Iniguez of Alpha Psi Lambda. Pierre Garcia paired with Cristina Padilla of Alpha Psi Lambda.
As the couples got ready to dance, Alpha Sigma Omega hostess Jessica Jean Cordero asked Monique L. Heilemeier, of the Children’s Advocacy Center, to speak on child abuse awareness.
Heilemeier engaged the audience through the use of interactive exercises. As volunteers acted out a situation, the audience learned about how child abuse affects a whole community.
After the talk, the competition began as Anna Delgado, senior hospitality and administration major, started the music. The first couple took their place on the dance floor.
All the couples gave their all during their final moves as they made their way around the dance floor to a mix of songs from Michael Jackson to country jams.
“I thought the dancers were very entertaining,” junior communications major Andrew Flack said.
During the brief intermission, the judges deliberated to determine the overall winner. Closing the event, the judges announced their final decision that Gamboa and Bohorquez were the overall winners.
“I think the event was a success,” said Yaczen Pelayo, junior history major and Alpha Sigma Omega member.
