Pass/Fail of Twittering celebs

Twitter is often criticized for its concept. Who wants to know what someone is doing at every moment of the day?

While this is the stereotype, not every Twitter user abuses this power. Many musicians and film stars utilize Twitter to keep their fans up to date on current projects. But like the rest of the world population, there are always a few bad apples who give something a bad name. Here is a quick “pass/fail” guide to some of the winners and losers of celebrity Twitter use.

Questlove (@questlove)
Activity: The drummer for The Roots keeps a steady balance of casual, funny remarks and tweets about his band and their work on “The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon.”
Verdict: Pass. “Quest” keeps things casual and realizes that Twitter is just a social networking site.

Kevin Smith (@thatkevinsmith)
Activity: The writer/director/actor behind the cult film “Clerks” often tweets about comic books, hockey and his public appearances. Though his tweeting is effective, Smith can often be childish. He publicly berates his followers who make snide comments, making it known who he chooses to block from his account.
Verdict: Fail. If you don’t know Smith’s movies, do not even bother following him. His man-child tendencies will be lost on the casual Twitter user.

Michael Ian Black (@michaelianblack)
Activity: The comedian’s tweets are often little one-liners and quips supposedly cooked up on the spot. When not trying to make followers laugh, he is plugging appearances and work.
Verdict: Pass. Black’s humor is too funny, and his fans will appreciate updates about his television show and comedy gigs.

Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano)
Activity: The actress’ often-perky tweets are almost always of a personal nature. She makes herself out to be someone who needs to alert everyone to her every move, but never her professional work. Similar to Kevin Smith in that she cares too much about mean things said about her by people she does not know outside of the Internet.
Verdict: Fail. If you enjoy stalking forgotten television stars, Milano is a must.

Rainn Wilson (@rainnwilson)
Activity: The “Office” star plugs his spiritual Web site, “Soul Pancake” (www.soulpancake.com) and keeps followers well informed of his every thought. He is funny, and plugs fellow Twitter users using their accounts for charitable causes.
Verdict: Pass. Wilson uses Twitter to a high degree, but more often than not in a responsible manner.
