State's Attorney Matekaitis wins third term

DeKALB | Christmas is just around the corner and the Voluntary Action Center, 1606 Bethany Road, is preparing for the holiday season by selling Christmas cards.
For eight years, VAC has organized this event for children of various ages to design holiday cards.
This is the second year that VAC has partnered with the Kishwaukee YMCA, 2500 Bethany Road, to bring visions of the YMCA summer camp participants to life and keep the VAC holiday card tradition alive.
Finalists include Kayla Kluber, Alyssa Knowlton, Phebe Palmer, McKenzy Price, Avery Stonewall, and Jackie Virani.
Prior to partnering with the YMCA, VAC commissioned local artist Bob Myers to design the Christmas cards around the theme of historical train stations.
Tom Zucker, executive director of VAC, said the entries are limitless and the VAC typically receives one card design from each child, totaling to about 700 children.
“The kids absolutely love it. We have to narrow the designs down to the best six, while taking into consideration the different age ranges,” Zucker said.
This means that a 12-year-old who creates a design will only compete with children in the same age group, not dramatically younger or older.
Zucker said the most upbeat, colorful and artistic cards are considered as the winners, and from there on out, the cards are printed and sold in packages of six.
The money earned for the holiday cards supports the Meals on Wheels organization, which is the initial reason why VAC began this competition.
Meals on Wheels helps to provide home-delivered meal services to those in need.
