Letter makes faulty assumptions about race

In the Oct. 22 issue of the Northern Star, you published a letter from Nma Winnie Okafor that took the whole black/white issue back to the days of Homer Plessy. Either you expected European-Americans (if you’re not ‘blacks,’ we’re not ‘whites’!) to miss this article, to have no spine or to respond, subsequently maintaining the pissing match that Ms. Okafor’s letter started.

Most white youth have had it easy? I gotta laugh at that one. Why do several white (which most prefer to be called) students qualify for financial aid if, as you suggest, they all went to New Trier High School? I often see black (ditto) students on campus dressed in stylish clothing, sporting electronics and driving a Lexus. By the way, I’d never suggest that they (or the whites) did anything but work hard to procure these items.

You complain that people tell you to stay off their lawn. I’ll tell you first-hand, that proverbial door swings both ways. Lemme paraphrase what the extraordinary (and, I’ll be damned) black music producer, Quincy Jones said: In this world, there are black people who are friendly and there are black people who are jerks; there are white people who are friendly and there are white people who are jerks.

Can’t we all just get along?
