Student Advisory Committees are lacking representation at University Council.

As of Oct. 10, Donna Mathesius, administrative assistant to University Council, said her records indicate that only the Student Advisory Committee for the College of Health and Human Sciences has a representative.

Every degree-granting college is supposed to name a representative for University Council by Sept. 10 every year, according to the UC Constitution.

The Student Advisory Committees for Business, Law, Education, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Visual and Performing Arts and Liberal Arts and Sciences each do not have a student representative listed on UC records.

In 2006-2007, only the College of Law had a representative on UC, according to UC records.

Student representatives had an average attendance of 3.625 at meetings in 2006-07, according to the UC agenda records. However, the SAC Law representative had the second highest attendance rating of all student representatives, with five of eight meetings attended.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences always has appointed a person to the representative position at UC; however, the person appointed the position has not always been able to attend the meetings, said Sue Doederlein, associate dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

UC usually meets from 3 to 5 p.m. every fourth Wednesday.

“Students are so busy now that they aren’t always able to attend meetings,” Doederlein said.

The SAC for Liberal Arts and Sciences held its first meeting in early October but was not able to appoint members to all positions, Doederlein said. The SAC for Liberal Arts and Sciences will be meeting again Nov. 7 and should be able to appoint someone to the position, she said.

Currently, the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology is in the process of naming a representative, said Mansour Tahernezhadi, associate dean of Engineering and Engineering Technology.

A representative from the College of Business said it has not yet had any student volunteers for the committee but that it is still attempting to find a student volunteer.

Deans for the College of Education, College of Visual and Performing Arts and College of Law could not be reached for comment.
