DeKalb Noon Lions Thanks NIU Students
By LETTER WRITER
NIU Cares Day on April 19 was a great success bringing students, faculty, and staff together for projects in the community. The DeKalb Noon Lions Club provided a work site that day for NIU students who distributed sugar-free candy, diabetes awareness information and collected hundreds of dollars in donations to benefit the Lions of Illinois Foundation.

The Lions organization works to prevent blindness. Diabetes awareness education is so important because diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among people between the ages of 20 to 74. Nearly one-half of people with known diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy.
The DeKalb Noon Lions club would like to express our sincere appreciation to NIU Students: Jeff Alexander, Elaine Alexander, Abby Shusis, Alex Baur, Rachael Cully, Courtney Denison, Karen Macella, Statira Peterson, Nichole Strauel and Lisandra Cortez who helped us that day.
Their enthusiasm and warm smiles presented a welcome presence and provided valuable diabetes awareness information to many area residents.

We would also like to thank Jewel Foods, Lehan Drugs and Wal-Mart for allowing us to use their locations for our project.
