Northern Star Online: Man charged with attacking Dekalb police booking officer

A Batavia man is charged with aggravated battery after attacking a booking officer at the DeKalb Police Department, police said.

Following an arrest at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, Mark Charipar, 20, allegedly “sucker punched” a booking officer and began to choke and strike him at the DeKalb Police Department. A dispatcher saw the attack over a security camera and called other officers to restrain Charipar, said Lt. Gary Spangler of the DeKalb Police Department. When the officers arrived in the room, they found Charipar choking the booking officer and had to fight Charipar to restrain him, Spangler said.

The booking officer that was attacked, and an additional officer who was injured while restraining Charipar, were both taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital for their injuries and released.

Charipar and a friend, Patrick Olchawa, 20, of Batavia, were originally arrested for allegedly breaking into cars in the 1200 block of Rushmore Drive and the 1300 block of Annie Glidden Road. At 2:45 a.m., Police were called about someone breaking into a car in the 1200 block of Rushmore. A short time later, a deputy from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department saw suspects in the 1300 block of North Annie Glidden trying to open car doors, Spangler said.

When the deputy tried to stop Olchawa and Charipar, they started running and the deputy was assisted in the chase by DeKalb Police.

Charipar was located in the 1200 block of Blackhawk Drive, and was caught by officers when he ran into a fence, injuring his face. Some items from the car burglaries were recovered from Charipar.

Olchawa was found in a residence at 1217 Blackhawk Drive, where other items from the burglaries were found.

Charipar is charged with two counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated resisting. He was transported to DeKalb County Jail on $800,000 bond. DeKalb Police will be working with the State Attorney’s office, and additional charges will likely be filed, Spangler said.

“This was not a typical resisting arrest situation that our officers deal with on a daily basis,” Spangler said.

Olchawa is charged with two counts of burglary to a motor vehicle. He later posted bond.

Spangler said the back-up officers responding probably saved the booking officer’s life, and the booking officer was nearly unconscious when officers arrived.

“We are trying to determine this guy’s intent; either to try and escape, or to kill the officer,” Spangler said. “If a few more seconds went by, this officer could have been killed.”

Charipar is on the men’s wrestling team at Waubonsee Community College, according to the Waubonsee Community College Web site.

Charipar was also scheduled to be in a kickboxing tournament April 26 at Rocky’s Dojo and Gym, 46 Terry Drive, in Sugar Grove, according to the Rocky’s Gym Web site.
