1. What are your goals for the Student Association?
There are many students on campus who do not know about the SA and are unaware that the SA is their voice on campus; increasing awareness on campus of the SA's function and being open to students' opinions and demands will be a personal priority. I also want to challenge the university and students to be more environmentally-friendly by evaluating our current practices, suggesting new programs (such as composting, using more recycled paper and switching to completely biodegradable consumables) and implementing those ideas campus-wide.
2. What qualifications do you have to represent the student body of NIU?
I currently serve on the executive board of the College Democrats and am acting president of V.A.L.E. I have interned in a Fortune 500 company and served as an adviser to a federal congressional candidate in 2004 and 2006, shaping policies and developing an overall progressive message that led to some of the highest votes cast for that party in the 14th Congressional District. I have also worked with elected officials and for the Secretary of State of Illinois and was responsible for many significant and legal matters; I am experienced with high-security information, parliamentary and bureaucratic procedures.
3. What in particular can you offer the student body in this position?
I come from a very diverse background with varying experiences that have always taught me to observe all sides of a situation before making a decision. I offer perspective, vision and an undying commitment to making our campus enriching, safe and enjoyable. I am a leader who not only thinks before speaking or making a decision, but I also consider the consequences of my actions. I can and will be held accountable for my actions and will take my responsibilities in the SA seriously. Whether fighting for immigrant rights or being the youngest participant in my church's annual conference, I choose my battles and preserve until I succeed.
