Advertising Designer
  • Designs advertisements to the specifications of Northern Star clients.
  • Works with advertising department daily.

Advertising Representative
  • Works with the Northern Star advertisers on a daily basis.
  • Reports to the advertising manager.

Reporter
  • Gathers, reports and writes news.
  • Reports to editor and/or assistant editor of department: Campus, City, Sports or Entertainment.

Columnists
  • Write weekly columns on a variety of topics for the Perspective section.
  • Reports to prospective editor.

Cartoonists
  • Draws cartoons, either in the form of a daily strip or occasional editorial cartoon.
  • Reports to prospective editor.

Copy Editor
  • Edit stories, write headlines, proof pages and sometimes design pages
  • Reports to copy desk editor and assistant copy desk editor

Designer
  • Create newspaper pages and packages using desktop-publishing software
  • Reports to news design manager.

Photographer/Videographers
  • Photojournalist: Tell stories with photos.
  • Reports to photo editor and assistant photo editor.

Web programmer
  • Designs and develops the Northern Star Web site.
  • Reports to the online editor.

Note: Only NIU students enrolled in at least 6 credit hours may work for the Northern Star. All NIU regulations that apply to student-workers are applicable to Northern Star employees. Graduate students must have approval from the graduate college, and students on academic probation (GPA below 2.0) must have written permission from their academic adviser and the dean of their college.
