NINA convention meets

About 200 members of the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association are expected on the NIU campus today for the group’s day-long annual fall convention in the Holmes Student Center.

Events will include talks on “politicians versus journalists,” media law, advertising and writing, as well as an awards luncheon, display of a “newsroom of the future,” and an afternoon reception.

NIU President John La Tourette is expected to attend the awards luncheon in the Duke Ellington Ballroom and extend greetings to the group.

At the luncheon, plaques and certificates will be awarded to winners in the annual newspaper contest sponsored by the university’s journalism department. Donald F. Brod, department chairman, will be master of ceremonies.

Awards will be presented to winners in 19 categories in three circulation groups.

The keynote speaker, at 9:30 a.m. in the Capitol Room, will be Paul Green, professor and political columnist and commentator. His topic will be “1990s—Battle of the New Breeds: Politicians vs. Journalists.”

Speakers at 10:15 a.m. will be Pamela Strobel, partner in a Chicago law firm, “Development in Media Law for the Next 10 Years; Tim O’Donnell, newspaper advertising director, “Advertising in the Next Decade;” and Marc Gibson, newspaper city editor, “Writing for the 1990’s.”

NINA, whose president is Steve Modzelewski of Matteson, Ill., is based in the NIU Department of Journalism, where it was founded more than 25 years ago by Prof. Donald R. Grubb.
