Minutes of NINA Board of Directors Meeting
Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002
Carl's Fargo Restaurant, Sycamore

President Jan Larsen called the meeting to order at 7:15 p.m.

Present (11):
Lois Self, Roger Ruthhart, Owen Phelps, Jan Larsen, Rick Nagel, Jim Slonoff, Pam Lannom, Lonny Cain, John Etheredge, Richard Parmater, Jim Killam.

Absent: (10):
Greg Rivara, Colin O'Donnell, Wally Haas, Tom Martin, Jeannine Otto, Kim Kubiak, Joe Corrado, Randy Swikle, Cheryl Wormley, Ray Karges.

August 9 minutes were approved unanimously (Phelps motion, Etheredge second).

Treasurer's report: Slonoff reported an end-of-September checking account balance of $2,612.77, plus a savings account of $5.94. October bills include $180 to Castle PrinTech for the past two newsletters, $129.08 to reimburse Jan Larsen for expenses from the high school advisers' workshop; and $200 to reimburse Slonoff for gifts for fall conference speakers. With expected October revenue, the balance should remain close to $2,600, Slonoff said. Treasurer's report approved unanimously (Nagel motion, Lannom second).

Executive secretary's report: Self said about 80 people have signed up for Friday's Fall Conference, up from only about 45 early this week. She asked that NINA board members push their papers to sign up earlier, because the late rush has made planning difficult. Cain suggested setting an earlier deadline.
Self also said NIU has 225 journalism majors this fall, the most since the merger of the journalism and communication departments.

Program committee: Lannom explained the rules for Friday's "Journalism Jeopardy." Despite general befuddlement from other board members, she assured them it would work. Audience members will be the contestants, with a panel of experts offering commentary on the questions.

Education committee: Larsen (for Haas) said the high school advisers workshop in Joliet was a success, despite the fact only 9 advisers signed up and just 5 attended. Board consensus was to hold a similar program next year, closer to Chicago - possibly in Hinsdale. No other education workshops are planned at this time.

Communications coordinator: No report.

Membership committee: No report, but the board suggested that the December meeting agenda include a discussion about board members for next year.

Meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.

Next board meeting: Friday, Dec. 6, at the Northern Star, NIU.

Minutes submitted by Jim Killam, communications coordinator, 10-28-02.
