Daily Washington File from the United States Information Agency. This offers TONS of information on current issues, arranged by topic and by region. It also contains links to other news sources.

Fedstats: One-stop shopping for federal statistics. There's a wealth of information and links here if you need government statistics. This is a good site to browse once in a while so you're familiar with what's here.

NASA home page

U.S. Census Bureau, which includes links to demographic info for all 50 states, including Illinois.
