Online message boards are a popular discussion forum. But they also can be a legal minefield, with potentially libelous material being posted by users.
This does not mean the Star should take a completely hands-off approach with messages containing potential libel, obscenity or other legal or ethical problems. Do not edit them. Delete them entirely. The law allows for that level of content control without the publication becoming liable for other content.
The online editor is responsible for these decisions, and thus is expected to know libel, privacy, copyright and obscenity law, plus the Northern Star's policy on indecency and questionable content. If unsure about a decision, the online editor should consult with editors and/or advisers.
In short, when in doubt, throw it out.
